What's different about the 16" MacBook Pro?

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is Apple's largest laptop. It features a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with 3456 x 2234 pixels, 1000 nits across the entire display and up to 1600 nits at peak brightness, and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It weighs 2.14 kg.

The 16-inch model is built exclusively with the higher-end chips: the M5 Pro with 18 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores, or the M5 Max with 32 or 40 GPU cores. There's no base M5 in this size. Both chips have three Thunderbolt 5 ports with speeds up to 120 Gbps, HDMI, an SDXC slot, and MagSafe 3.

The M5 Pro model offers up to 24 hours of video playback on battery power, while the M5 Max model offers up to 22 hours of battery life. That's two hours longer than the 14-inch Pro model with the same chip. There's also a high-power mode: the fans spin faster, allowing the laptop to run more efficiently under the most demanding tasks.

What to choose: M5 Pro or M5 Max, 16″ or 14″

The 14" is about half a kilogram lighter and can be used with the base M5. The 16" is often chosen for its screen and battery life, especially if the laptop rarely leaves the desk.

How much memory and storage should I buy?

Once purchased, the memory and storage are fixed, so the configuration is planned for years to come. 24 GB is sufficient for development and editing; 48 GB and above are used for 3D scenes and local AI models.

Storage starts at 1 TB, and with the M5 Max, it goes up to 8 TB. Video projects quickly fill up 1 TB, so consider 2 TB for those.
